Ethiopian Origin ID Card entitles nationals of Ethiopian Origin who have acquired foreign nationality to various rights and privileges by lifting the legal restrictions imposed on them when they lost their Ethiopian nationals and create a legal framework whereby persons of Ethiopian Origin fulfill their contribution to the development and prosperity of their country of origin. (Proclamation No. 270/2002 and Regulation No. 101/2004)
Ethiopian Origin ID cards are valid for five years.
If an applicant wishes to add children under 18 to his/her ID card, then he/she should present two copies of a legal document showing the relationship (i.e. legalized Birth certificate).
Rights of Ethiopian Origin ID card holders:
- S/he shall not be required to have an entry visa or residence permit to live in Ethiopia;
- S/he shall have the right to be employed in Ethiopia without a work permit;
- S/he shall not be subjected to the exclusion that applies to foreign nationals; regarding coverage of pension scheme under the relevant pension law; and
- The children of the holder of the ID card who are under the age of 18 shall have the right to enjoy facilities granted.
Exceptions:
- S/he shall have no right to vote or be elected to any office at any level of Government
- S/he shall have no right to be employed on a regular basis in the National Defense, Security, Foreign Affairs and other similar political establishments.

What is the use of Origin ID?
Origin ID gives the owner limited rights and privileges that are related to an Ethiopian national even through the owner of the ID isn’t Ethiopian. Certain rights include free pass to the country without the need to buy a visa and the right to invest inside the country’s economy.
